MSGCU celebrates community, local businesses and members

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI (October 21, 2020) — For Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union (MSGCU), the giving season means more than ever before. During a difficult and trying year, the credit union saw their membership of educators, government workers, and healthcare professionals bravely jump into action. In the spirit of giving back, MSGCU and its team members dedicated last week, International Credit Union Week, to engaging in community service, supporting local businesses, and celebrating members.

Donating $3,800 and volunteering 1,000 hours

While branches were closed on Monday, October 12, MSGCU team members made it their mission to donate funds and volunteer 1,000 hours of community service to deserving organizations across Metro Detroit. During the Day of Service, team members made 319 blankets for Fleece and Thank You, a local organization dedicated to comforting children receiving hospital care, donated 22 pints of blood for the American Red Cross, potentially saving 22 lives, and donated $3,800 and walked more than 600 miles in support of American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Team members also cared for shelter animals and delivered food to families in need.

“MSGCU is an organization that thrives on caring for the communities we serve and is honored to make this donation and give back 1,000 hours to charities and organizations that need our support more than ever,” said MSGCU Vice President of Human Resources, Karen Haneline.

Supporting hundreds of local eateries

As part of an industry-wide movement, MSGCU team members participated in CU Lunch Local. Now in its ninth year, CU Lunch Local promotes all of the good things credit unions do to help local businesses thrive. On Tuesday, October 13, MSGCU team members purchased lunch from their favorite locally-owned eateries, equating to a “cash mob” of more than $3,700.

“Supporting local restaurants has never been more important, given the struggle brought on by the pandemic,” said MSGCU Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, Ann Jones. “We are pleased to support the revitalization of our local eateries while enjoying a delicious lunch.”

Showing appreciation for 130,000 members

MSGCU is humbled to serve more than 130,000 members who place a great deal of trust in the credit union as their financial partner. To show its gratitude, the credit union annually celebrates Member Appreciation Day on the third Thursday of October. This year, members were showered with many thanks and gifted with free paper shredding, refreshments (individually packaged to keep members safe), and a safety key. This portable multi-use tool helps members avoid direct contact with public surfaces and can be used to press buttons, pull handles or doorknobs, push doors, and touch screens.

“We all have experienced a tremendous amount of change this year,” says MSGCU President/CEO Peter Gates, “There is one thing at MSGCU that will always remain constant: our dedication to members and the ‘people helping people’ philosophy. We continue to be grateful for the opportunity to give back to the community and serve members.”
