MSU Federal Credit Union (MSUFCU) officially inaugurated its groundbreaking youth banking space, the Money Lab, located within MSUFCU’s 311 Abbot building. The grand opening celebration drew a crowd of more than 150 local families, civic leaders, and young financial explorers.
The event marked the public unveiling of a unique, interactive branch, created specifically for youth members, where experiential play seamlessly integrates with foundational financial education. Attendees experienced a wide array of hands-on activations designed to demystify banking concepts. The celebration featured a money bank painting and button-making station, dream wall, and a community photo booth featuring a special appearance by MSU’s Zeke the Wonderdog.
“We designed this space to provide children a place where they can explore, learn, and build confidence with money in a way that feels fun and approachable,” said April Clobes, MSUFCU President and CEO. “Through hands-on opportunities to participate in real banking activities, we’re helping make financial education more engaging, meaningful, and memorable.”
Beyond the grand opening festivities, the Money Lab serves as a fully operational credit union branch. Under parental guidance, youth can open specialized savings accounts, process transactions, and make deposits or withdrawals, instantly reinforcing positive financial habits. The facility’s educational architecture includes a custom Financial Table of Elements, a high-density Lite-Brite-type wall, a collaborative LEGO layout, and a dedicated FUNtivity Zone.
“Our goal is to help children feel comfortable asking questions, learning about money, and building confidence along the way,” said Clobes. “The habits we develop early can have a lasting impact on our financial future. When families learn and grow together, it strengthens our entire community.”
The Money Lab directly advances MSUFCU’s mission to foster connection, empowerment, and economic capability through progressive community spaces.
Participation in the Money Lab requires an active MSUFCU youth account, which can be easily established on-site during a visit.
- General Public Hours: Open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon.
- Educational Group Hours: Wednesday afternoons from 1-3 p.m. are reserved for schools, youth organizations, community groups, and other educational programs.
