NAFCU statement on the President’s intended nomination of John Herrera to the NCUA Board

WASHINGTON, DC (July 14, 2016) — National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU) President and CEO Dan Berger issued the following statement on President Barack Obama’s intended nomination of John Herrera to a seat on the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Board.

“We look forward to working with Mr. Herrera, should he be confirmed, to ensure a positive regulatory environment for credit unions,” said Berger.

Berger called Herrera to congratulate him.

Herrera is the senior vice president for Latino and Hispanic Affairs at Self-Help, a nonprofit community development financial institution. He has held that position since 1999. From 2003 to 2010, he served as a commissioner for the North Carolina Credit Union Commission. He was twice elected as a town alderman in Carrboro, N.C., in 2001 and 2005.

Herrera has served on the board of the Latino Community Development Center in Durham, N.C., since 2001 and also cofounded the state-charted Latino Community Credit Union in 2000. He received a B.S. from the University of Delaware and an M.S. from North Carolina State University.

If confirmed, Herrera would serve alongside NCUA Board Chairman Rick Metsger and Board Member J. Mark McWatters.
