Normandale Hills Elementary School welcomes Minn. Department of Commerce Commissioner Mike Rothman and United Educators Credit Union
BLOOMINGTON, MN (November 18, 2013) — Minnesota Department of Commerce Commissioner Mike Rothman visited fourth graders at Normandale Hills Elementary School (NHES) with representatives from United Educators Credit Union (UECU) on Thursday, Nov. 14.
Commissioner Rothman visited NHES as part of his statewide outreach tour, which is focusing on financial literacy. During the visit, he read the book ”
Alexander, Who Used to be Rich on Sunday,” by Judith Viorst. The book helps teach children the importance of managing their money wisely.
“An important part of my job is to get out into the schools to talk to kids,” Commissioner Rothman said.
The visit also included a presentation from UECU representatives about their youth account, which is based on three principals: “Save. Share. Spend.” The youth account teaches kids important life lessons about the value of money.
“When you have a plan for your money, it’s easier to save, helps you feel good about sharing, and makes you spend more wisely,” Andrea Molnau, UECU’s Vice President of Marketing, explained to the students.
Through a partnership that began in 2002, NHES and UECU have participated in the school district’s “Prepare Bloomington” program, which is designed to provide a direct link between the work world and the classroom. Once a month, UECU representatives from its Eden Prairie branch go to NHES to open accounts and take deposits from students. Additionally, UECU provides volunteers, joint fundraising efforts, financial education materials, and conducts presentations in the classroom on a variety of financial literacy topics throughout the school year.
“We are honored to have Commissioner Rothman visit our school,” said Principal Andy Vollmuth. “We are so fortunate to have these special guests help teach our kids about financial literacy.”
