PCU Community Foundation Fourth Annual Golf Tournament raises over $13,500 to aid local efforts

WOODBURY, MN (October 3, 2013) — Sunny skies and a strong outpouring of support enabled the PCU Community Foundation to raise over $13,500 at its fourth annual golf tournament on Monday, September 9th. The event, held at Dellwood Hills Country Club, attracted a total of 101 golfers and 39 event and hole sponsors.  The foundation will use the funds to aid local education, food shelf and community initiatives.

During the tournament dinner, participants heard from one of the recipients of foundation funds, Tartan High School DECA advisor and PCU Student Branch advocate Craig Spreiter.  Spreiter, a member of Postal Credit Union for over 30 years and education partner for over 15, spoke about the importance of establishing partnerships that create win-win relationships. “The foundation and PCU have been long-time supporters of Tartan DECA through our internship program, marketing projects and financial assistance,” Spreiter said. “In addition, we have really benefited from the foundation’s commitment to financial literacy and have begun implementing student-taught workshops to help Tartan students begin to make wiser financial decisions in an environment that makes asking questions a lot easier.”

In January, Postal Credit Union opened a Student Credit Union at Tartan.  The student branch is operated by students, serving students, with a goal of teaching youth the basic principles and practices of the financial services industry. The students who work in the PCU Student Credit Union will develop a deeper understanding of how a financial institution operates. In addition, all students will have an opportunity to open accounts and learn first-hand about the benefits of saving for future goals, budgeting and establishing a strong credit history before they leave high school.

PCU Community Foundation Chairman Brian Sherrick was grateful for the turnout and generosity of participants. “We are extremely thankful for the ongoing support of our vendor partners, credit union colleagues and board members in helping to make this fourth annual event

a tremendous success,” Sherrick stated.  “Thanks to their participation, generous raffle donations and sponsorships, our endowment fund continues to grow and will enable to foundation to continue its mission to strengthen and improve the quality of life in our local communities.”

Established in 2005 by Postal Credit Union, the PCU Community Foundation is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) serving the greater Twin Cities metro area.  It operates under the guidance of a Board of Directors, which oversees its financial management, sets policies and procedures for fundraising and grant making in accordance with its by-laws and mission.
