PenFed team runs for Children’s Miracle Network at Credit Union Cherry Blossom Race

PenFed sponsors race providing $10,000 donation and more than 50 volunteers

SAN ANTONIO, VA (April 10, 2018) — A runner with 500 races under her belt, two tri-athletes, and entire families were among the 100+ runners and volunteers from PenFed Credit Union, the nation’s second largest federal credit union, participating in the annual Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run and 5K Run-Walk benefitting Children’s Miracle Network on Sunday, April 8, 2018.

“PenFed is committed to supporting the communities where we do business. We are proud to have had more than 50 volunteers and more than 50 runners at the annual Credit Union Cherry Blossom,” said James Schenck, President and CEO, PenFed Credit Union. “It is inspiring to see our employees coming together with other members of the community to raise money for a cause like Children’s Miracle Network.”

PenFed was proud to sponsor a water stop at Mile Six of the 10-mile race where volunteers provided water and inspiration to the runners. This was PenFed’s 2nd year as a major sponsor of the event, providing a $10,000 donation and 50+ volunteers to man the water stop. In total, PenFed has donated more than $1.3 million to charitable organizations in the Greater Washington, DC area.

“Being able to stand side-by-side with my PenFed colleagues to support the runners and this amazing cause is a true honor,” said Laurie Horstmann, Vice President of IT Business Integration, PenFed Credit Union. “This is my second year organizing the volunteers for this event. My job is easy because our PenFed employees truly believe in our corporate identity as a community leader. I’m already looking forward to next year.”

PenFed joined Credit Union Miracle Day, Inc., a consortium of credit unions and credit union suppliers in partnership with CUNA Mutual Group and PSCU, which was the title sponsor of the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run, 5K Run-Walk and Kids’ Run.

The Credit Union Cherry Blossom is known as “The Runner’s Rite of Spring” in the Nation’s Capital. The staging area for the event was on the Washington Monument Grounds and the course passes in sight of all of the major Washington, DC Memorials.

PenFed had 50+ employees running in the ten miler and 5K run-walk.

Volunteers prepped the PenFed water stop at mile 6 to support runners and provide much-needed hydration.
