San Mateo Credit Union’s members mark International Credit Union Day by raising $10,000 for local nonprofits

REDWOOD CITY, CA (November 17, 2022) — San Mateo Credit Union (SMCU) encouraged members to use their SMCU debit and credit cards for a purpose on October 20, International Credit Union (ICU) Day. For every card transaction that day, SMCU pledged to donate 25 cents to local nonprofits, WeHOPE and Mental Health Association of San Mateo County.

In all, SMCU members conducted nearly 40,000 debit and credit card transactions on October 20, resulting in $5,000 donations to WeHOPE and Mental Health Association of San Mateo County.

“Every year credit unions from all over the world come together to celebrate the credit union difference of people helping people,” said SMCU President and CEO Wade Painter. “This year our members, who are supporting us as a local business, embodied that sentiment and translated it into support for our local community. We are honored to contribute to essential organizations, like WeHOPE and Mental Health Association of San Mateo County, who build up our community every day by the incredible work they do.”

SMCU is committed to supporting the financial wellness of our community. Local nonprofits such WeHOPE and Mental Health Association of San Mateo County have played a vital role in providing resources to families.

“This donation means a lot to us,” said Pastor Paul Bains, President and Co-Founder of WeHOPE. “It will help us continue to serve the underserved community in the areas of housing, job readiness, food security, laundry and shower services, and much more. WeHOPE, which stands for We Help Other People Excel, is appreciative that our community partners such as San Mateo Credit Union support our efforts.”

“Mental Health Association of San Mateo County is working to help extremely low-income homeless individuals and families move into permanent housing,” said Melissa Platte, Executive Director of MHASMC. “These funds came at a critical time to help us provide move-in supply kits, so these individuals will have basic necessities in their new housing.”

SMCU is proud to partner with WeHOPE, Mental Health Association of San Mateo County and other local organizations all year long to support the residents of San Mateo County.
