San Mateo Credit Union’s members mark International Credit Union Day by raising $12,000 for Thrive Alliance

REDWOOD CITY, CA (December 28, 2023) — On October 19, International Credit Union (ICU) Day, San Mateo Credit Union (SMCU) urged its members to use the power of purpose by utilizing their SMCU debit and credit cards. In a commitment to community support, SMCU pledged to donate 25 cents to the local nonprofit, Thrive Alliance, for every card transaction made on that day.

In all, SMCU members conducted nearly 45,000 debit and credit card transactions on October 20, resulting in a $12,000 donation to Thrive Alliance.

Wade Painter, President and CEO of San Mateo Credit Union, expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community. “At SMCU, we believe in the power of community and the positive impact we can make when we come together. International Credit Union Day provided a perfect opportunity to leverage the transactions of our members for a greater good. We are thrilled to have raised $12,000 for Thrive Alliance and are thankful to our members for their generosity.”

Thrive Alliance, the alliance of nonprofits for all of San Mateo County, will benefit significantly from this donation. Its mission is to support and promote a nonprofit sector that is a major contributor to the economic and social health of San Mateo County. Thrive also runs Thrive RISE (Resilience in Shared Emergencies), which activates networks of nonprofits in the event of local emergencies. Georgia Farooq, Executive Director of Thrive Alliance, commended SMCU for their commitment to social responsibility. “We are truly grateful to San Mateo Credit Union for their generous contribution. This partnership demonstrates the incredible impact that can be achieved when businesses prioritize giving back to the community. The funds raised will support our mission of creating positive change and improving lives.”
