Security Service Charitable Foundation donates $10,000 to Opportunity Center for the Homeless

Donation will purchase air conditioning units for shelter

SAN ANTONIO, TX (February 28, 2020) — The Security Service Charitable Foundation is assisting the El Paso community by donating $10,000 to Opportunity Center for the Homeless. Donated funds will be used to purchase two air conditioning units for the men’s emergency shelter. This is a critical need as summers in El Paso can average 100 degrees.

“This incredible gift is helping us provide a safe and temperate shelter for some of the most vulnerable members of our community,” said Ray Tullius, executive director for Opportunity Center for the Homeless. “It’s partners like the Security Service Charitable Foundation, that allow us to positively impact the lives of El Paso’s homeless individuals, and hopefully shape better opportunities for future generations.”

The emergency shelter is one of seven shelters the center operates. It houses 180 men and is at capacity most nights. When the air conditioning units are not working, the center must turn people away, forcing patrons to sleep on the street.

“Sometimes, the most impactful way to help can be one community and one person at a time,” said Marisela Molinar, vice president of member service-El Paso for Security Service Federal Credit Union. “We appreciate being able to assist the Opportunity Center for the Homeless by helping to provide a more comfortable living environment for those they serve.”

Across the United States, more than a half million people find themselves homeless on any given night. The Opportunity Center for the Homeless is a vital community resource, supporting the homeless community to move beyond their condition if they are capable; or protecting them if they cannot improve their condition because of physical, emotional, or psychological disorders. The organization works with over 2,000 individuals per year; many of whom are not served by other providers in the community.

The Security Service Charitable Foundation helps further Security Service Federal Credit Union’s corporate goal of community service by contributing to deserving organizations and causes in the credit union’s market areas.
