Students and teachers squeal with glee upon receiving a $5,500 grant for kissing a pig

FORT WASHINGTON, PA (February 13, 2020) — When Sarah Hale, business development officer at Archbishop Wood High School, learned kissing a pig could land the school a grant for personal finance resources, she chuckled. She watched a video and perused photos of TruMark Financial® Credit Union’s Kiss A Pig Financial Literacy fundraiser and didn’t think twice before she said, “Archbishop Wood is in. We’ll find a teacher to kiss a pig.”

The school embraced the concept of kissing a pig and immediately began its fundraising efforts. In exchange for a donation, students voted for the teacher they wanted to kiss the pig. Science teacher Steven Waskie won the honor and smooched Raines, the pot-bellied pig, at the Oct. 2 event held at the Abington Art Center in Jenkintown. With the money raised, TruMark Financial awarded Archbishop Wood a $5,500 grant along with the other schools that participated in the Kiss-A-Pig fundraiser.

The fundraiser is one component of TruMark Financial’s Building Financial Futures initiative which heightens awareness for financial literacy and raises money for local schools in need of personal finance materials.

The following schools also participated in the Kiss-A-Pig Financial Literacy Fundraiser:

•       Abraham Lincoln High School
•       Baldi Middle School
•       Bensalem High School
•       Cheltenham High School
•       Herbert Hoover Elementary School
•       Maritime Academy Charter School
•       Norristown High School
•       Our Lady of Calvary School
•       St. George School
•       St. Jerome School
•       Stephen Decatur Elementary School

“We are excited about the partnership with TruMark Financial and look forward to enriching our personal finance curriculum with updated resources purchased with the grant,” said Sarah Hale.
