The Summit Federal Credit Union partners with the Rochester Police Department’s Do the Right Thing awards program and pledges matching funds for their scholarship program

ROCHESTER, NY (May 4, 2023) — The Summit Federal Credit Union will be partnering with the Rochester Police Department’s Do The Right Thing awards program from the City of Rochester and pledging matching funds to support their annual Do The Right Thing Scholarship Program.

For over 25 years, the Do The Right Thing award program has recognized Monroe County role model students in grades K-12, rewarding positive behavior, accomplishments, and good deeds. Winners are celebrated at public ceremonies during the school year. The goal of the program is to foster positive relationships between law enforcement and our community youth. The program has been part of the Rochester Police Department since 1995.

An extension of the Do The Right Thing award program, the Do The Right Thing scholarship program has awarded over 110 scholarships since 1997, for a total of $110,000.00. Any Do The Right Thing award-winner who is a senior in high school and has a satisfactory attendance and conduct record is eligible to apply for a one-time scholarship to be applied towards the payment of their college or trade school tuition or expenses. Scholarship applications are sent to students in the spring of their high school senior year. The Summit will provide matching funds to award up to two scholarships annually through this program. To acknowledge this partnership, the scholarship will be named the Do The Right Thing / The Summit Federal Credit Union Scholarship Program.

“From being able to heroically handle life-threatening situations, to doing good deeds and raising awareness about causes important to them, we have been inspired by the stories of young people doing the right thing in our community,” commented Twanda Christensen, Vice President of Marketing and Community Engagement for The Summit. “We are excited to be able to partner with the Rochester Police Department and the City of Rochester and award scholarships to inspiring young leaders as they move on to the next chapter of their lives.”

“We are so grateful for the support that The Summit Federal Credit Union is giving this program and the youth in Monroe County,” stated Laurie Kingsley-Henry, Program Coordinator for the Do The Right Thing Awards Program. “Through this very generous donation, we can further help some outstanding students continue doing great things and achieve success in their futures.”
