TMG to release fraud-prevention white paper series for financial institutions

DES MOINES, IA (November 22, 2013) — A new white paper issued by payments processor The Members Group (TMG) shares tips on providing the best possible shopping experience for cardholders while also monitoring for card fraud during the heavy holiday spend season. Written for community financial institution (FI) leaders, the paper is the first in a series of four fraud-prevention white papers TMG will issue.

Other topics TMG will cover in the series include the emergence of biometrics, consumer empowerment and card-not-present (CNP) fraud. The thread that ties all four papers together is keeping the consumer shopping experience at the forefront while also working to protect them – and FI issuers – from the threat of fraud.

“To make the lives of cardholders easier during the harried shopping season, many credit and debit card issuers increase credit limits and modify some of the restrictions on spending, such as limits on the number or total amount of transactions,” writes TMG’s Nicole Reyes, senior fraud prevention analyst, in the first white paper. “Of course, cardholders aren’t the only ones who stand to gain from modified restrictions. As cardholders change their spending behaviors in advance of the holidays, spotting unusual transactions can be like spotting a needle in a haystack. Fraudsters are well aware of this vulnerability.”

Reyes goes on to discuss methods for protecting FI issuers and their cardholders from holiday card fraud, while also maintaining top-of-wallet positioning for their cards. These include:

  • Updating lines of communication
  • Defining the timeline of modified restrictions
  • Monitoring local fraud trends
  • Utilizing laser-targeting prevention strategies
  • Educating cardholders on fraud trends and tips
