Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union hosts ‘Shred Day’ Oct. 16

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, MI (October 8, 2014) — When it comes to identity theft, one person’s trash is another one’s treasure. Filled with personal information, discarded documents represent a virtual gold mine to identity thieves. To ensure private information stays private requires vigilance and a shredder.

In order to raise awareness of what people can do to protect themselves from identity theft, the Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union (MSGCU) is hosting “Shred Day 2014” on Thursday, Oct. 16.

For the first time, the program will be expanded to an all-day service at two MSGCU branches (Chesterfield and Madison Heights). The general public is invited to join MSGCU members at either location to safely dispose of papers containing private personal and financial information.

“When it’s your personal information, nothing is more important than privacy and security,” Peter Gates, MSGCU President and CEO, said. “Disposing of one’s records and documents safely is the first line of defense against identity theft and that is why we are pleased to expand our Shred Day program for our members and the entire community.”

The Shred Day Program runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at MSGCU locations in Chesterfield and in Madison Heights, Michigan. MSGCU branches and offices are at 45120 Market Place Boulevard (off M-59), Chesterfield, MI  48051, and at 480 West 12 Mile Road (west of John R Road), Madison Heights, and MI 48071.

Each visitor may bring up to two paper grocery bags full of documents to be shredded at no cost. Guests also will enjoy cider and doughnuts. Everyone who stops in also will receive a gift with no obligation.

Thursday, Oct. 16 is also MSGCU Member Appreciation Day.  By offering valuable and free services like shredding, MSGCU is underscoring the community service focus of credit union membership.
