Top lawmakers, regulators join NAFCU’s distinguished 2016 Congressional Caucus lineup

WASHINGTON, DC (August 26, 2016) — Distinguished members of Congress and top leaders from federal regulatory agencies have joined the outstanding slate of speakers confirmed to address the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU2016 Congressional Caucus, scheduled Sept. 18-21 at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill.

NAFCU’s Congressional Caucus, the association’s credit union lobbying event of the year, brings hundreds of credit union leaders to Washington to talk about the industry’s vital issues, visit with lawmakers on Capitol Hill and hear from prominent congressional and financial industry leaders.

Notable speakers joining the Caucus slate are:

  • Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Ala.), member of the House Financial Services Committee and Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Sewell serves on the Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets and Government Sponsored Enterprises and the Subcommittee on Monetary Policy and Trade. She is also the ranking member of the Intelligence Subcommittee on Department of Defense Intelligence and Overhead Architecture. Sewell also serves as the House Democratic chief deputy whip and sits on the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee.
  • Rep. Frank Guinta (R-N.H.), member of the House Financial Services Committee. Guinta recently introduced the NAFCU-backed bill, H.R. 5419, the “Credit Union Examination Reform Act of 2016.”
  • Harriet Tregoning, principal deputy assistant secretary for the Office of Community Planning and Development at the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Tregoning recently led HUD’s Office of Economic Resilience, which helps various regions, cities, counties and towns across the U.S. build a strong economic foundation by enhancing fiscal stability, transportation programs and affordability.
  • Brian J. Peretti, is the acting director of the Treasury’s Office of Critical Infrastructure Protection and Compliance Policy. Peretti supervises the planning and implementation of policies relating to critical infrastructure, cybersecurity and homeland security.

Among other recent additions are former presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who is one of the 70 senators who wrote CFPB in July to urge more regulatory relief for credit unions under the bureau’s exemption authority; Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., who authored the NAFCU-backed legislation, “Taking Account of Institutions with Low Operation Risk (TAILOR) Act” (H.R. 2896); House Financial Services Committee Ranking Member Maxine Waters, D-Calif.; Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., who led a NAFCU-backed letter from 70 senators urging CFPB to make better use of its exemption authority; House Financial Services Subcommittee Chairman Randy Neugebauer, R-Texas, who is also the lead on NAFCU-supported “Data Security Act” (H.R. 2205); and Rep. French Hill, R-Ark., a chief sponsor of NAFCU-supported legislation that would increase the reporting threshold for open- and closed-end mortgages under the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act.
