United Federal Credit Union Receives Recognition as National Federal Credit Union of the Year

ST. JOSEPH, MI (July 11, 2013) — United Federal Credit Union (UFCU) headquartered in St. Joseph, Mich., was chosen as National Federal Credit Union of the Year by the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU). UFCU was honored today at NAFCU’s 46th Annual Conference and Solutions Expo held in Boston.

“United Federal Credit Union is honored to be the recipient of this prestigious award,” stated UFCU President/CEO Gary Easterling. “Our employees will continue to blaze the trail for other financial institutions to follow in our path by continuing to grow in the midst of adversity and providing people-first Member service.”

The NAFCU Annual Awards Competition names the National Federal Credit Union of the Year, CEO of the Year, Professional of the Year, and Volunteer of the Year in three credit union asset-size categories. UFCU was the winner among credit unions with $751 million or more in assets, the largest asset-size category.

Nominees were judged on several selection criteria, including exceptional market growth, successful handling of adverse situations, and other major successes. UFCU demonstrated excellence in these criteria by completing the historic purchase of Griffith Savings Bank in Griffith, Indiana, in 2012. That purchase marked the first time a federally-chartered credit union purchased the assets of a state-chartered FDIC-insured mutual savings bank.

Credit unions were evaluated in a variety of other areas, including successful navigation of industry and legislative changes, positive community impact, sound financial management, service to low- and moderate-income individuals, and commitment to Member education. UFCU and its employees donated over $229,000 and 665 volunteer hours to community organizations.

As a NAFCU Annual Awards Competition winner, UFCU received an engraved award and was recognized today at NAFCU’s 46th Annual Conference and Solutions Expo. UFCU was also featured in the July-August issue of The Federal Credit Union magazine.

NAFCU is the only national organization that focuses exclusively on federal issues affecting credit unions, representing its members before the federal government and the public. For more information, visit www.nafcu.org.
