MADISON, Wis. – The recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan again prove disasters can strike quickly and without warning. To help credit unions prepare for a potential disaster, CUNA Mutual Group’s next Credit Union Protection Webinar, set for April 13, will focus on disaster preparedness.

The session is part of the webinar series developed exclusively for the insurer’s Credit Union Bond policyholders, said Brad Mundine, senior manager of Credit Union Protection Risk Management.

“Recent natural disasters serve as a timely reminder of the importance of a comprehensive disaster recovery and business continuity plan,” Mundine said. “While we certainly can’t control the timing and magnitude of natural or manmade disasters, credit unions should be prepared with a viable plan to restore operations and minimize business disruption.”

The webinar, “Survive the Unthinkable,” will reinforce how emergency situations, whether natural or manmade, can take a huge toll on credit unions. This session will focus on identification of risk, implementing a disaster preparedness program and developing a business resumption plan.

The following webinar in the series, on May 18, will focus on employee dishonesty. “Having proper internal controls in place is crucial to minimizing or preventing employee dishonesty losses and pinpointing accountability in the event of such a loss,” Mundine said. “Employees Gone Bad” will offer practical advice on how to handle this sensitive issue.

Webinars are 60 to 75 minutes long and are provided as a no-cost, value-added benefit to CUNA Mutual policyholders, which represent more than 90 percent of U.S. credit unions. In 2010, more than 6,000 individuals representing nearly 1,500 credit unions registered for the webinar series.

In addition to these upcoming events, a special 20-minute webinar, “What Every Director Needs to Know,” is now available online to highlight risk exposures around credit union directors’ fiduciary duties and indemnification and how today’s challenged economic environment increases directors’ risk exposure. This webinar is available until April 13, at www.cunamutual.com/mpl, so it can be easily shared with board members.
