UW Credit Union Receives CUNA HR/TD Excellence Award
MADISON, WI (May 13, 2013) UW Credit Union received the CUNA Human Resource Training and Development Council (CUNA HR/TD) Excellence Award for Strategic Leadership, making them a two-time recipient of the distinction.
“This award is a reflection of our commitment to developing and promoting leadership from within our organization,” said Lee Wiersma, Executive Vice President & Chief Human Resources Officer of UW Credit Union. “We’re proud of our efforts that support and encourage employees’ continuous learning and engagement.”
UW Credit Union received the award for their Emerging Leader Program, a year-long training initiative that prepares current employees for leadership roles. The program, developed in-house, was implemented to prepare the organization for future expansion.
“We know that employees have the greatest impact on member satisfaction,” said Wiersma. “That’s why we work hard to retain and promote individuals whose values are in alignment with doing what’s right for our membership.”
Since the program’s inception in 2012, 89% of leadership roles were filled by internal candidates whereas in 2011, only 40% of roles were filled internally. In addition to management training, participants learn corporate strategy, core functions of the business and participate in a formal mentorship program.
“Our data has shown that internal candidates promoted into leadership roles are more likely to be successful leaders, which ultimately positions the organization for success,” said Wiersma, who credits the creativity and dedication of the human resources team for the success of the program.
The award was presented to the credit union during the CUNA HR/TD Council Conference in Anaheim, CA. UW Credit Union received the award in 2012 for its Far From Average lending initiative program. The CUNA Excellence Awards recognize and honor credit unions that exemplify excellence in the human resources and training disciplines and serve to promote credit union philosophies through people leadership.
