Ventura County Credit Union gives $50,000 in grants to victims of the Thomas Fire

Local credit union supports Ventura County community in fire recovery efforts

VENTURA, CA (July 18, 2018) — After realizing the significant impact of the Thomas Fire in Ventura County, Ventura County Credit Union (VCCU), a not-for-profit financial institution, established a fire relief campaign to help not only VCCU members, but the community as well.

From March to May 2018, VCCU gave $50,000 in grants to 65 members who were impacted by the Thomas Fire to help them recover and rebuild. The credit union awarded the grants based on need to members who submitted proof of loss or damage to their homes.

Additionally, at the time of the fire, VCCU cleared approximately 7,000 square feet at its Ventura branch to house the American Red Cross’ disaster relief site, which offered guidance, supplies and support for affected community members. Later, VCCU also housed a FEMA disaster relief program that assisted the community with disaster unemployment insurance, housing, legal assistance and beyond.

“Our community’s response to the fire affirmed my belief that above all else, we are stronger together,” said Joe Schroeder, president and CEO of VCCU. “It was a privilege to provide space for the American Red Cross and FEMA to offer relief and comfort, and we know the grants provided to VCCU members will continue to help our community rebuild. Recognizing not only the short-term, but also the long-term impacts of the fire, we plan to continue working to provide support to victims of the destruction.”

These Thomas Fire relief efforts are one of many ways VCCU strives to support the Ventura County community. The credit union also regularly hosts free financial literacy workshops, partners with a wide variety of local organizations to benefit the community, and provides financial assistance through the Foundation of VCCU, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on giving that emphasizes the underserved, beautification and preservation of the environment, and community health and well-being.
