S&P 500 rises slightly Friday, but still heads for first losing streak in 10 weeks

The S&P 500 bounced a bit on Friday as traders tried to shake an early 2024 sell-off amid conflicting economic data.

The broader index added 0.1%, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.2%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, however, slid 0.2%.

The three major averages are all on track to break nine-week winning streaks, with the Nasdaq Composite suffering the biggest loss for the week at 3%.The S&P 500 and Dow are down 1.4% and 0.7%, respectively.

Stocks gyrated on Friday as traders assessed incoming economic data to determine if and when the Federal Reserve will start cutting interest rates.
