So you’ve been tasked with the annual credit union disaster recovery plan update ? You graciously accepted  the task and smile broadly until your boss walks away. Once those words are spoken a myriad of emotions and feelings flood your whole being. WHY ME,  you scream inside your head!

Your heart starts to beating out of your chest and you start to sweat like you just ran a marathon. You get flushed, feeling like you are about to faint. I feel funny… , I feel dizzy…, I need to sit down for a minute. Thoughts racing through your head trying to remember who you offended. You begin asking yourself, Are you kidding me? What have I done to deserve this?

Ultimately you embrace the opportunity to showcase your talents. Then you start thinking where do I begin? You start scouring the internet looking for help on different websites.

The first step is to make sure you know which plan you are responsible for updating. Is it the IT disaster recovery plan, business continuity plan, crisis communications plan, or some other plan? In the past, DR planning encompassed much more than today. DR planning today usually is focused around the recovery of systems and facilities. In the past it meant systems, facilities, plans for business units, and any other plan someone created.
