A New Ally in the Fight against Fraud

The best ally any credit union or community bank has in the fight against fraud is the customer. No one cares more about a customer’s money than the customer — they are one of the first affected by a fraud attack and can be the last to recover.

By enlisting the help of the very people they are trying to protect, financial institutions (FI) will find themselves in a position to head off new attacks and recover more quickly from ones that have already occurred. However, it’s more than just asking customers to be vigilant with their accounts. True partnership needs to include training and education, as well as tools and resources for customers to use.

As a FI works to educate employees on new types of fraud and train them on how to spot it, it makes sense to hold the same type of sessions for customers. Awareness is one of the best ways to combat fraud. By helping customers understand what fraud is and how it can affect them, you are putting them on high alert to spot suspicious activities.
