Affinity Plus Foundation drives success for financial education

ST. PAUL, MN (June 30, 2015) — Golfers from across the country gathered at Prestwick Golf Course in Woodbury, Minn. on Tuesday, June 23 to play a round of golf in support of the Affinity Plus Foundation at its 14th Annual Golf Tournament. The tournament is one of the organization’s largest fundraisers and its proceeds are used to support the Foundation’s mission of providing financial education for people across the state of Minnesota and an academic scholarship program for students seeking higher education.

Tallying the highest number of registered golfers ever at 144, the Foundation also welcomed an additional 30 people for dinner, filling the banquet room at the clubhouse. Tournament attendees include employees, board members, and members of Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union, as well as vendors, partners, and Charities of Choice of the credit union.

“Today was truly remarkable,” said Amy Hanson, Affinity Plus Foundation Executive Director. “Record attendance, generous donations, great partners and the beautiful weather, all aligned to create the perfect event to support financial education and scholarships across Minnesota.”

While enjoying their meal, guests heard from recipients of grants and scholarships distributed by the Foundation in 2014 so they could learn about how they’re using the funds to improve the lives of people in Minnesota or pursue their educational goals. Grant recipients included Jr. Achievement, MN BestPrep, UnderConstruction, and MORE, and scholarship recipients included Amrita M., Eric S., Alison V., and James E.

“It’s so encouraging to see the number of participants increase and the amount of funds raised each year grow because it demonstrates that people believe there is a need for financial education and are generous in providing their support so we can extend our reach, grow our programs, and further the training of our volunteer educators,” shares Hanson.

The tournament offers golfers the opportunity to improve their score by accepting donations to the Foundation in exchange for stroke-reducing tools such as substitute putters, the previous year’s scholarship winner, whose shot isn’t counted in their total for that hole, ropes to extend the reach of their ‘gimmes’, and mulligans.

“What a great day,” commented participant Mike Pearson of K. Pearson Mechanical, LLC. “We look forward to this event year after year and are happy to support a great cause while enjoying a day of golf.”
