CU Realty Services urges credit unions to be members’ real estate advocates

New webinar is designed to help fill the gaps in what home buyers know about mortgages

SCOTTSDALE, AZ (June 04, 2015) — Years after the real estate crisis has ended, when so many homeowners got blindsided by the terms of their mortgages, studies still show that buyers don’t know everything they should before signing on the dotted line – even the most simple things. Believing this to be a costly yet preventable mistake, CU Realty Services is launching a new webinar aimed to educate credit unions on the existing gaps in homebuyer knowledge and what they can do as advocates to help prevent it.

The free CU Realty webinar, “Engaging Home Buyers Though Real Estate Advocacy,” will help credit unions understand where the gaps are and how to engage their home-buying members at the most critical time: before they choose a lender and mortgage.

“The webinar will cover many interesting details that credit unions need to know – including the fact that most home buyers think getting a mortgage is the easiest step in the home-buying process,” said Deb Jones, Regional Sales Director for CU Realty Services and webinar presenter. “Yet nearly half of them don’t feel confident in their knowledge about their mortgage. They don’t know what they don’t know.”

So many choices exist: fixed vs. adjustable rates, differences in lenders’ fees, interest-only jumbos, terms of a loan … . According to Jones, these are just some of the disparities in what home buyers know, compared with how they act. “And that,” she says, “creates a huge opportunity for credit unions to step in and help.”

Jones says by educating members about how mortgages work, as well as about the various types and terms, members enter into the home-buying process better prepared and informed. Credit unions are able to engage with them much earlier in the process and, in turn, stay in front of them until it is time to find a lender.

The webinar will focus on three key areas: WHAT member advocacy is in real estate; WHY your members need it; and HOW credit unions can leverage it to increase their purchase mortgage volumes. It is scheduled for Thursday, June 11, at 12 noon PT. To register, go to www.curealty.com/advocacy.
