CUES recognizes 2014 CUES Governance Leadership Institute graduates

MADISON, WI (July 2, 2014) — CUES is pleased to recognize 18 credit union board members and executives who recently completed CUES Governance Leadership Institute. All have earned the distinguished Certified Credit Union Director (CCD) designation, bringing the number of credit union directors who have their CCD to 114.

Attendees of this graduate-level program learn from distinguished faculty at the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. They leave the institute knowing how to balance healthy debate and diversity with consensus building. Key issues of study include strategy in the boardroom, risk management, negotiations, duty and liability, influencing change, succession planning, and communications.

“My experience at the Rotman School of Management in Toronto for the CUES Governance Leadership Institute was my best development experience in my many years in the credit union movement. Because of the faculty’s close work with many boards, they bring real life, timely and interesting issues to the table. They also give plenty of time for the attendees to learn from each other in open discussions. I highly recommend the institute, and we are making plans at Xceed to send a board member to the Rotman School each year,” said attendee Dennis Ruffner, Xceed Financial Credit Union, El Segundo, Calif.

“I really enjoyed the institute,” said attendee Ann K. Brooks, New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union, Albuquerque, N.M.  “It provided time to develop critical leadership skills such as fiduciary and legal responsibility, how to minimize board risk, negotiating and governance best practices. It was also a great networking opportunity to share experiences and lessons learned with seasoned board chairs and vice-chairs.”

Highly-respected Rotman was ranked number one in the world for their faculty by the Financial Times in 2013. Other notable Rotman Financial Times 2013 rankings include number three for course design and number five for teaching methods and materials.
