National Credit Union Foundation approves 16 Biz Kid$ financial education grants

Grants to increase reach of award-winning financial literacy series

The National Credit Union Foundation’s (the Foundation) board of directors has approved 16 new Biz Kid$ financial education grants for 2015, totaling $78,000.  These grants are distributed to encourage the credit union movement to use Biz Kid$ and its curriculum to build students financial literacy and economic education skills.  Biz Kid$ is the credit union funded public television series that teaches kids about money management and entrepreneurship.

“We are thrilled to be able to fund these amazing initiatives and innovative programs for these 16 credit union organizations,” said Danielle Brown, the Foundation’s Director of Development & Donor Relations. “Biz Kid$ is a great resource for credit unions and we are excited to see the impact these programs will have towards improving youth financial literacy in America.”

Some highlights of the grant projects:

  • Atomic Credit Unionin Piketon, Ohio will implement the Biz Kid$ Piggy Bank Hunt in eight of the credit union’s student-run branches.  They will utilize the Biz Kid$ DVDs in financial education sessions in the classroom, and will present the program at two of their local YMCA summer camps.
  • Credit Union League of Connecticutin Meriden, Conn. will utilize their young professional network to educate them about Biz Kid$ resources.  They will task them with developing a plan to bring Biz Kid$ into the schools across the state and teach it to students.
  • Credit Unions Care Foundation of Virginiain Lynchburg, Va. will utilize Biz Kid$ episodes to meet the Economics and Personal Finance Standards of Learning that are mandated for graduating high school seniors in Virginia. They will customize Biz Kid$ box sets to meet the standards and will provide teacher training workshops to share the resources.
  • Natco Credit Unionin Richmond, Ind. will work with the Boys & Girls Club of America to integrate Biz Kid$ into their current financial education curriculum and introduce credit unions nationally to the opportunities available through partnerships with their local Boys & Girls Clubs and Biz Kid$.
  • Northwest Credit Union Foundationin SeaTac, Wash. will offer Biz Kid$ Starter Kits to children who are being treated at the six regional CMN Hospitals within Oregon and Washington by choosing four families per hospital to grant this gift to their respective school.

  • Maps Credit Union, Salem, Ore.
  • NuVista Federal Credit Union, Montrose, Colo.
  • Securityplus Federal Credit Union, Baltimore, Md.
  • ServU Federal Credit Union, Painted Post, N.Y.
  • Southern Chautauqua Federal Credit Union, Lakewood, N.Y.
  • Trona Valley Federal Credit Union, Green River, Wyo.

About Biz Kid$
Biz Kid$ is a financial literacy initiative launched nationally in January 2008 that teaches kids about money and business. The initiative includes an award-winning TV series, free classroom curriculum, outreach activities, and a website targeting children 9 – 16 years old. The Foundation is responsible for the fundraising and outreach of the program, and a coalition of over 300 credit unions and affiliates from across the country have helped exclusively fund Biz Kid$.
