The MD|DC Credit Union Association honors five star FCU Board Treasurer Burdette as volunteer of the year

COLUMBIA, MD (June 14, 2023) — The MD|DC Credit Union Association has presented Five Star Federal Credit Union Board Treasurer Margaret Burdette with the 2023 Volunteer of the Year Award. The honor was announced Tuesday at CONNECT 2023, the Association’s annual meeting and convention at MGM National Harbor.

Margaret has dedicated over 45 years of service to Catonsville-based Five Star Federal Credit Union (formerly Saint Agnes FCU), rising through the ranks to become President in 1984. After retiring in 2013, she joined the credit union’s board of directors.

Paul Coakley, Board Chair of Five Star FCU, praised Margaret’s continued commitment to the credit union saying, “Her willingness to support our credit union well after retirement has proven to be extremely valuable. Not only does she provide sound advice to our leadership team, but she also offers her expertise, attention to detail and insight to our board.”

Known for her service-oriented mindset, hard work and above all, her humility, Margaret is actively involved in the local business community. She serves on the board of directors for the Greater Catonsville Area Chamber of Commerce and mentors emerging credit unions through the CU Foundation of MD|DC’s Roycroft Masters Advisory Program. Margaret has also served on the board of directors for the Association and the Baltimore Chapter, remaining highly engaged in advocacy activities and participating in awareness events.

Jim Whipp, President/CEO of Five Star FCU, congratulated Margaret stating, “Being honored as the Volunteer of the Year is a testament to Margaret’s outstanding contributions and commitment to Five Star and the credit union movement.”

“Margaret is truly deserving of this award,” said MD|DC Credit Union Association President/CEO John Bratsakis. “She embodies the ‘people helping people’ spirit of credit unions, generously giving of her time and talent.”

Margaret holds the distinction of being the first credit union leader to receive both the Professional of the Year Award (1999) and the Volunteer of the Year Award which recognizes volunteers who are selflessly dedicated to the growth and development of a credit union.
