Simplifying your organizational process

When your budget planning meeting comes around, does it feel like you’re reinventing the wheel? After that meeting, do you sometimes leave knowing that you or others are not so much informed as confused about the subject matter?

Many of our organizations are way more complex than they need to be. In his blog on startup businesses, David Cummings wrote, “Great leaders take complex strategies and simplify them down into key messages and action items that everyone can follow.”

Forbes lists three initiatives that leaders can undertake to confront complexity:

1. Insist on common processes. Set a standard within your industry for completing processes. If everyone is doing their own thing, departments won’t be communicating with each other effectively.
