Your Credit Union Needs “People”

Walt Disney once said: “You can design and create, and build the most wonderful place in the world. But it takes people to make the dream a reality.”

No place is that statement truer than in your credit union. Through careful planning and execution you can design and create the best lineup of products and services available at any financial institution around the world. But if your people aren’t on board you can forget success. By people, I don’t just mean your staff although that’s where it starts. Consider how members can help.

I recently emphasized the important role of one credit union’s volunteers in a talk with a group of members. You see, this credit union is unique in the fact that it serves employees of a statewide organization but only has one main office.

I didn’t focus on the credit union…rather the many financial struggles their friends and co-workers are experiencing. I suggested they could play a role in the financial success of their friends and family by educating them on what the credit union can do to help in various situations.

They realized they were more than a group of people who delivered the news about the latest promotion. Instead they realized they were a group who had a responsibility to help their friends and co-workers. It gave them a fresh approach to their volunteer positions within the credit union. And suddenly they found themselves tasked with living out the role of people helping people.
