Why Can’t My Credit Union Technology Department Move Faster?

Let’s be real. Year after year your technology budget continues to increase and while you’re seeing results, the time to deliver/implement seems to be slowing down. In fact, it seems that more and more frequently schedules are pushed out and your I.T. department can’t seem to catch up. You know you have a great team – they’re skilled engineers and developers who are used to the fast paced credit union industry. So why can’t your credit union technology team move faster?  Maybe it’s time to have that conversation with the team! If you want to know what’s bogging down your technology department then this post is for you!

Let’s start with the obvious – do you have a handle on the department’s role and every team member’s responsibilities? – A clear indication that you may not have a good handle on the I.T. team is if you refer to them as Data Processing. The days have gone when your technology team simply processes data in some sort of fashion. So what do they do? It might be embarrassing to even ask but until you do, you won’t be able to make the strategic decision necessary to create efficiencies and better align the I.T. efforts with your strategic goals. Today’s I.T. teams are knee-deep (neck deep?) in many areas:

  • Core Processing
  • Report Writing
  • New Product Implementations and Project Management
  • Business Application Management – Lending, Mortgage, Collections, Business Lending, OFAC, Call Center
  • Backups
  • Job Scheduling and daily/monthly/annual processing
  • Custom Programming
