4 ways to make a great first impression

Whether you’re meeting a client for the first time or starting a new job, it’s always nice to make a great first impression. Since it really only takes a few seconds to make an impression on someone, here are a few tips to help you get started on the right foot…

Smile: If you smile the first time you meet someone, you’ll come across as friendly and approachable. The last thing you want to do is have any expression on your face that makes you look standoffish. So when you’re making introductions with someone, putting a smile on your face will make your new acquaintance feel comfortable and at home around you.

Shake hands: You’ve probably always been told that a strong handshake is best. While a limp handshake won’t earn you any points, don’t go in too strong or you might come across a bit aggressive. Your best bet is to be firm and confident without breaking the other person’s hand.

Make eye contact: Looking someone in the eye when you talk to them is the best way to show respect and shows that you’re paying attention when someone else is speaking. Don’t overdo it though; you don’t want the eye contact to reach a point where it makes you seem creepy.

Take your time: Speak slowly and clearly when you’re making introductions to someone for the first time. Being excited can make you speed things up a bit, and that can make you appear nervous or anxious. Take a breath before you speak and remember that you’ll have plenty of time to converse with your new client or coworker in the future.
