A 1-minute read: Make the world a better place

Several times a year, I look forward to writing articles for CUInsight.com. I try to think of a topic that will resonate with those who might read it, and my July article was nearly complete.

Then I shelved it.

Because it wasn’t timely.

We are in turmoil. My article about business leadership just didn’t seem appropriate considering the current unrest in our country.

So, I decided to take this opportunity to invite anyone who reads this to consciously practice some (or all!) of the five attributes below. Specifically and deliberately. Don’t proceed through your day and then reflect back. Proactively look for opportunities to exhibit these traits. Push yourself out of your comfort zone. Grow. Be purposeful with your actions and conversations.

This article certainly isn’t intended to lecture anyone but merely to invigorate your awareness of the opportunities around you.

I’ve been trying myself, and I’ll admit, it’s harder than I thought. But I’m trying.

  1. Be kind.

To everyone. Even strangers.

  1. Be engaging.

When someone wants to share a story, an experience, or an opinion, listen. Ask questions. Learn from that conversation.

  1. Be respectful.

Especially with people who disagree with you. It’s okay to agree to disagree. Respectfully.

  1. Be empathetic.

Try to understand the other person’s point of view. Everyone has a different journey.

  1. Be inclusive.

The world could use a little more unity and a little less divisiveness.

Be the change.

Because if everyone who reads this article would practice one of these traits every day, we could all make the world a better place.
