Dear CEO,

Dear CEO,

I am writing you a letter as my 22-year-old self, fresh out of college and ready to rock my new job as marketing director for your credit union.

First of all, I can’t tell you how much it means to me that you saw the potential I bring to your credit union and for the opportunity to learn from you and the other leaders who work here. Not only have you made a big impact in how you empower and encourage employees, but you have also positioned the credit union for growth by always putting our members’ needs first.

I know we don’t see eye-to-eye on everything because our backgrounds and experience are unique to us. While the ways in which we work are very different, I know we have the same goals at the end of the day.  You want me to succeed.  You want me to do a fantastic job.  You want me to grow the credit union with my marketing efforts.  And you regularly ask me how you can help me do these things.  Here are my answers to you:

  1. Define expectations. By you being open to allowing me to ask what is specifically expected of me, I’m able to make sure I am focusing my efforts in the appropriate areas and on the appropriate tasks so we are on the same page.
  2. Teach me how the credit union runs. Show me the balance sheet and how we earn income in order to better serve our members.  Teach me how to show the Return On Investment from my marketing efforts so I know what to do and how to make the biggest impact on our members and the credit union.
  3. Bring me into important discussions. I know I am not a senior manager or a board member, but if I were privy to the discussions about important changes to our credit union or the things it needs to accomplish, I can build a marketing plan to maximize those opportunities.
  4. Help me rally the troops. Provide me with the ability and encourage me to share our marketing successes with the other employees because they benefit everyone here and it helps everyone feel like we are all a team.
  5. Foster an environment of learning. Encourage me to seek out professional and personal development learning opportunities; while these opportunities sometimes cost the credit union money, they are investments in me as an employee. This ultimately benefits our credit union in the form of ideas, better representation of our credit union, and many other powerful advantages.

Thank you for believing in me.  I look forward to learning from you and working alongside you to help our members achieve financial success.
