Don’t Argue With The Expert

by. Mark Dudley

Often times we hire people to do for us the things in life we cannot. For example, I lack knowledge on anything related to my car. If something is wrong, I take it to a local shop I trust. If I need something rewired in my house, I hire a guy. I value my time a lot. Those who are qualified to do these things—experts— not only save me time, but lots of money.

So why do we tend to argue with the expert? Maybe it’s human nature or maybe it’s just down right stubbornness. While this is not solely a Credit Union problem, this definitely exists in the movement. Whether you hire a marketing firm to come up with a new brand or image, or you hire a consultant to help you tighten up the shop and run profitable, listening to them might be a good idea. “That hasn’t worked before, or we can’t do that” aren’t good arguments anymore.

Once you validate their credentials and you hire them (which means you trust them), do your part and get out of the way. And while this problem mainly comes up with outside vendors, this problem can also leak down to your staff. Do you trust them? Are they qualified to do their job? Well then let them do their job! Quit arguing with the expert and do YOUR job!
