Tidying up your credit union
There are two ways to clean a garage. One, you can cherry pick what no longer has value and discard it. Two, and my personal favorite, is to drag everything out into the driveway and make it earn its way back in. After 12 years of living in our house, “we just moved” was no longer an excuse for the one side of our garage consumed by 12 years of junk. It was time for a major clean up. I dragged all of my tools, boxes, worn down toys, bikes and bookcases into the driveway. After evaluating the mountain of accumulated treasure, I was surprised at what didn’t make its way back in. It somehow seemed to lose value once it left the shelf. I was so delighted with the reclaimed space and decluttered environment, that we now have a bi-annual cleaning of the garage.
One of the hottest shows right now on Netflix is Tidying up with Marie Kondo. This is a television show that teaches people how to declutter their lives. Have we gotten this bad? Yep. This clutter-free obsession is sweeping the country and, hopefully, will sweep the business community as well.
Do you have an annual review to declutter your credit union? I’m not necessarily speaking of physical clutter, but rather taking a look at last year’s practices of serving members and making them earn their way back into this year’s practice. Are there habits that need to be discarded or updated? What earns its way back onto your calendar? When you assess ideas, methods, practices, and attitudes, you will either affirm what’s working or make room for innovation and improvement.
