Your Credit Union Mission Statement: Just Words, or a Commitment to Your Members?

French Writer Anatole France once stated, “To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.” This is exactly what a mission statement is all about. It is a statement of actions and plans, and also a statement that your credit union and your team must believe in and turn to.

Before you read any more of this blog, take a look at your mission statement and answer this question: How long ago was this mission statement written, and is it still relevant today?

If you answered yes, and you are one-hundred percent sure that your mission statement is relevant, well that’s only half of the battle. The other half is making sure you are referring back to your mission statement as you plan ahead for 2013, or make decisions at your credit union. One credit union we work with adopted a new mission statement earlier this year, and uses that one small sentence as a yardstick for every decision being made. Decisions are now made by the board and management based on whether or not it advances the renewed mission of the credit union.
