NAFCU’s Engage 2023: Day one

The National Association of Federally-Insured Credit Unions (NAFCU) annual conference, Engage 2023, kicked off with a day filled with insightful sessions, networking opportunities, and thought-provoking discussions with a backdrop of sunny Long Beach, California.

Keynote speaker, Jon Petz, a best-selling author and motivational speaker, delivered an inspiring talk on “The Power of a Simple Moment in Our Not So Simple Financial World.” He emphasized the importance of human connection in the financial services space and how transforming mundane moments into significant ones can positively impact members, colleagues, and the overall culture of credit unions.

The conference continued with a deep dive into the latest trends and challenges in today’s lending environment by Pete Hilger, CEO at Allied Solutions. Following Hilger’s discussion, James Robert Lay from Digital Growth Institute shared consumer behavioral shifts in the current unique market, highlighting the role of credit unions as a beacon of trust for members navigating their financial journeys.

These talks were followed by parallel sessions for board members and executives. Board directors explored succession planning while executives delved into technology trends shaping credit unions. Ann Petros, Vice President of Regulatory Affairs at NAFCU, presented the current happenings in Washington D.C.:

  • The priorities of the NCUA (National Credit Union Administration).
  • The CFPB’s (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau) actions against “junk fees.”
  • The EPA’s (Environmental Protection Agency) Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund.

The day concluded with a keynote from Shep Hyken, a customer service and experience expert. He discussed “Member Amazement and Moments of Magic®,” providing tools to create a member-focused culture and handle complaints effectively all while dazzling the audience with a little bit of magic.
