How to overcome shyness at work

Do your homework

When taking part in a work meeting, have a roadmap for what you plan to speak on. Writing down your talking points will help you out tremendously. Factor in how much time you estimate you’ll be given for making your point and come up with concise ideas to share. Going into a meeting prepared makes all the difference and will help boost your confidence.

Stay informed

Always be up to speed on current events and issues others at work are interested in. That way when your coworkers talk socially around the office you will have things to input. There’s nothing worse than being clueless about what’s being discussed so although you don’t need to be an expert, knowing the basics will help you to be less reserved.

Always be approachable

If others see you as pleasant and friendly then they’ll likely enjoy your presence and your company. When your coworkers like being around you, you will inevitably feel less shy and nervous. There are various personality traits the most likable people possess and a positive and open demeanor is certainly one of them.

Take notes

Watch very closely how the most personable and outgoing employees in your office interact with others. Model yourself after them and give yourself room to grow. Going from being shy to being more extroverted will not happen overnight so don’t be too hard on yourself. The more you let you your guard down and open up, the more comfortable you will feel with those around you.
