Things I’ve learned from my three-year-old

It’s true that my job as a mother is to nurture my son, and encourage and support him throughout his life. The funny thing is, he has unknowingly taught me so much.

I have received a great deal of advice from mentors, family members, and friends, but the simplest wisdom, and often the most valuable, has come from my toddler.

Maintain resilience.

When things don’t go your way, it is easy to get frustrated and discouraged. My son will seem tremendously upset when he is let down or falls and scrapes his knee. To my constant amazement, he always pulls himself up and keeps going. Not only does he bounce back quickly, but he does so with a smile on his face. This is a lesson we can all take to heart. Things may seem terrible and upsetting, but whether you are encountering a financial hiccup or a professional obstacle, brush yourself off and keep moving.

Find the beauty in everything.

As my son grows and experiences things for the first time, it is incredible to see the constant awe on his face. He is happy just to see the moon shine at night and the stars in the sky. Our day-to-day lives can be hectic and demanding, but stop to enjoy the beauty around you. When you take a minute to appreciate simple things like the autumn leaves or a colorful sunset, you will inevitably feel more grateful.

Surround yourself with positivity.

The people around you absolutely impact your mood and experience. When you surround yourself with optimistic individuals, they will bring out the best in you. My son spends time at three different households- my parents’, his dad’s, and mine and although it isn’t always ideal and his schedule can be tiring, everyone around him is always happy and positive. Therefore, no matter where he goes he is surrounded by positivity and as a result, he is happy and confident.

Nothing compares to the purity and innocence of a child, but a lot can be learned from it. We all have our own personal struggles and challenges but approaching them with resilience, open-mindedness, and optimism can greatly impact your life and bring you happiness and success.
