How your credit union can motivate millennials

As a millennial myself, it’s hard not to resent the often-negative stigma placed on our demographic. Sure, some individuals aged 18-34 are unmotivated and entitled, but these characteristics can also describe many in other age groups as well. For those credit union managers that do find it difficult to inspire their millennial workforce, consider these tips to help them succeed.

Flexibility

In today’s digital world, young professionals rely heavily on their technological devices. Therefore, unless the task at hand requires constant in-office supervision, allowing millennials to work a more unorthodox schedule is a sure-fire way to motivate them. If the job does require their presence, offer flexibility in other ways; hold a team meeting and get their feedback on their preferences and innovative ways to get the job done while allowing them more freedom.

Work perks

Your credit union does not have to include ping-pong tables and loud music for millennials to feel inspired. Get creative with other ideas for a fun and refreshing work environment. Office perks such as free snacks and beverages or a comfortable break room make a difference when it comes to millennial morale. Also, allowing them to take walks for coffee or just to get some fresh air are greatly appreciated and help to maintain a positive work culture.

Open communication

Sometimes millennials are described as dramatic and while that may be the case for some, in reality, they are actually just in touch with their emotions and don’t have issue expressing how they feel. While at work, as in their personal lives, they will appreciate an environment where open and honest communication is encouraged. Providing them with feedback, while also allowing them the opportunity to be direct about how they feel, will help foster a positive workplace where they feel highly motivated to succeed.
