Finding tranquility in the midst of stress

One of the greatest challenges of leadership is knowing how to restore yourself, especially in the midst of chaos. Below are a few suggestions about how you can grab a few moments of sanity in spite of the storm.

  1. Meditate: The simplest way to meditate is to sit comfortably with your feet flat on the floor, close your eyes and count your breath in and breath out. Try to make each breath slightly longer than the last. This can be done easily at your desk or if you really need some privacy the bathroom!
  2. What’s going right?: It’s tempting to get into the nitty-gritty and seek resolution, but if you’re burned out, spend some time focusing on what’s going right. This can bring balance and perspective to the situation and leave you feeling as though things might not be as bad as they seem.
  3. Get outside: Take a short walk to “clear your head” and breathe the fresh air. Leave the problems in the office and instead focus on what’s around you.
  4. Play Three Things: Look around and identify 3 colors, then 3 sounds, 3 types of dogs, etc. and mentally say their name to yourself. This will “shift gears” in your brain allowing you to shut off stressors for a few moments.

The secret to snatching some extra calm from the jaws of stress is to stop being so hard on yourself. It’s okay to not know all the answers. Turn your focus to what’s going well throughout your day. You’ll find greater clarity and a greater ability to resolve any problems life throws your way.
